Cobra Kai’s Susan Gallagher Shines as Star and Producer of Hit Web Series “Queering”

Actress Susan Gallagher is no stranger to the screen, starring in the hit show Cobra Kai and taking on a new role as the star and producer of the web series Queering. An official selection of the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, Queering tells the story of a newly divorced mom as she navigates the world after coming out as bisexual. We had a chance to catch up with the actress to talk about the new web series, her role on Cobra Kai and more!

Tell us a little bit about your current project, Queering, and how that came to be.

The role of Val in Queering was through a self submission I pursued after seeing the audition on Backstage. After researching the Brazilian writer/director, Leticia de Bortoli, and reading the character breakdown of Val and premise of the show, I was drawn to the project. Queering brilliantly addresses the struggles and challenges Val faces as she comes out as a bisexual from a video she made that goes viral. The recent divorcee and retired dentist faces the backlash of her decisions mostly from her lesbian daughter, Harper, who was just getting settled in her apartment in NYC and thinks her Mom is in crisis mode. The writing uses humor and has a lightness addressing a sensitive topic, which is enjoyable for the audience who quickly becomes invested in the many interesting and hilarious characters in Val and Harper’s lives.

What has been your favorite episode so far? To produce and to perform in?

Season 2’s finale has some major changes for Val and the beautiful writing required me to challenge myself as an actor and a woman. All the characters have special raw moments that stay with you and are truly unforgettable.

What’s the most rewarding part about producing a show?

The most rewarding part of producing or helping to produce any project is the love and passion you have for the story. That gives me a deep attachment to the project, which brings the cast and crew together as a happy family. When it’s a low budget project, everyone involved has signed on because they believe and love the story, so it becomes a labor of love.

You’re also in the hit series Cobra Kai, tell us a little bit about that.

Playing the sassy and funny, Homeless Lynn, in Cobra Kai has been a blast and I’m grateful to be part of this hit series. The first 2 seasons of Cobra Kai were on YouTube, so we’re all excited and anxiously awaiting the release of Season 3 on Cobra Kai’s new home, Netflix. They’ve already released the first 3 Karate Kid Movies on Netflix since Cobra Kai is the actual continuation of the KK movies. Cobra Kai Season 1 and 2 will drop on Netflix August 28 and we’re looking for the worldwide premiere of Season 3 soon after.

Are there any other exciting projects you have coming up?

I’m part of Sam Medina’s tribute film, 22- The Forgotten Soldier, which is a thoughtful project about PTSD and currently in pre-production. Sam is a veteran actor that I had the pleasure of being directed by on Sons of Thunder. You can find out more about 22-The Forgotten Soldier at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/22-the-forgotten-soldier#/

What advice do you have for women looking to create their own content?

Don’t be afraid to fail and take constructive criticism. Surround yourself with positive people who support and inspire you. Set goals and deadlines.
